Bob Oberstein is uniquely qualified to consult in the disciplines of human resources and labor relations having served on both sides of the labor management table in the public and private sectors. After several executive and chief spokesperson positions, his most recent position was as the Labor Relations Administrator for the City of Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to that assignment, and after several years ‘in the trenches’ Bob became an academic and directed the Labor Management Relations Certificate and B.A. programs at Ottawa University in Phoenix, Arizona where he also taught undergraduate and graduate classes in employment and labor law, human resources, conflict resolution, negotiations, grievance processing, arbitration and ethics. As a result of his studies and practice in the field of conflict resolution he also developed multi-disciplinary course entitled Apology and Forgiveness in Society. As a faculty member, Bob served as the Ombudsman for all student faculty disputes, as well as being the Disabled Student Liaison working with the diverse working adult population. In recognition of his work, Bob was twice recognized in Who’s Who in Education and awarded tenure and an honorary Masters degree of Human Letter from Ottawa University in Kansas.
Additionally, while still in academia, Bob continued to serve both sides of the labor management community as a neutral fact finder, mediator and arbitrator for multiple organizations and agencies. Several of his arbitration awards have been published by the Bureau of National Affairs and are referenced in How Arbitration Works by Elkouri & Elkouri, often considered the consummate reference in the field of arbitration. His other professional efforts are many and varied, including being a guest commentator for KJZZ, the local Phoenix National Public Radio (NPR) affiliate. Bob is a frequent conference presenter and seminar facilitator whose workshops are well known for their upbeat, relaxed, positive, humorous and challenging style. Additionally, both the City of Phoenix and the State of Arizona recognized Bob’s skill and expertise by having appointed Bob to serve on a number of public boards and commissions related to human resources and specifically to labor management relations. Bob has been honored by the National Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service with a Certificate of Recognition for lifetime achievement in promoting positive labor management relations.
